New Worlds Through Literature Libraries, as well as The New Worlds Through Literature organization, represent a non-denominational philosophy that reinforces living well. New Worlds Through Literature Libraries provide access to books that illustrate the makings of character as expressed through virtuous acts.
Breaking the cycle
The mindsets we develop in response to life are powerful. In some situations, to break the cycles of negative thinking, we need examples of positive thinking. We need to see a different story than our own. The examples provided in literature can interrupt negative cycles of thinking, negative thoughts that are often expressed as hate and hopelessness and contribute to generational cycles of violence, abuse, drugs, depression, and suicide. Literature can speak to our mind-sets. With regard to literature, Jane Yolen states, “It [literature] tells us of the world as it should be. It holds certain values to be important… it becomes a rehearsal for the reader for life as it should be lived.”
The Little Engine that could
For example, The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper is an entertaining and inspirational children’s book included in the New Worlds Through Literature Children’s Library. This book was chosen to be a part of the Library because children can observe the personal traits that build character. A recognition of the personal virtues in The Little Blue Engine provides information the reader has an opportunity to consider. The story tells the tale of the Little Blue Engine who demonstrates, enthusiasm, compassion, courage, determination, and perseverance in bringing toys to the boys and girls on the other side of the mountain. She wonders whether she can make the long hard climb over the top of the mountain; however, when things get tough climbing the mountain, she repeats to herself, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can,” as she climbs the steep mountain. No thoughts of defeat are uttered, she remains focused on the goal and repeats, “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.” Everyone is joyful when The Little Blue Engine makes it to the other side of the mountain!
